Most founders and startup operators I know use AI notetakers already. That’s because they fall into that sweet upper-right quadrant of AI tools that are easy to use, and have game-changing impacts. If you’re not using one yet, giddyup. If you are, it may be time to make sure it’s the best fit.

AI magic.

Back in the day, I never walked into a meeting without my trusty Moleskine. But looking people in the eye and being fully present while writing coherent notes in a notebook is no easy feat - even on a Zoom. Also, good luck finding something you think you wrote down at some point last year. Switching to an AI notetaker is magical. You’ll capture every detail spoken by anyone in every meeting, so you can stop worrying that you’ll forget something. You won’t be distracted by taking notes. And you can easily search for items from past meetings. Plus, AI notetakers are easy to set up and use, and pretty inexpensive. In my book, they are no-brainers (see what I did there?).

Which lid is right for your pot?

I started out using Otter. To be honest, I didn’t put a lot into the decision about which one to use at first. Some early adopter on my telehealth startup team used it on a Zoom, and I tried it. It was so much better than writing in a notebook, I just kept using it. More recently, I tried Granola, and liked it so much I switched.

Granola

Best for Mac users who do a lot of video calls and love simplicity

Pros:

• Doesn’t show up as a blank box on calls

• Doesn’t arrive before you

• Has a note-pad app, so you can jot down a few key things

• Pops up in its own window if you open tabs, so you won’t lose it

Cons:

• Only works on Macs

• There’s no mobile app

Summary:

Granola keeps it simple. When it sees a video call about to start on your calendar, it prompts you to both join the call and open the Granola notepad. That way, if you’re running late, it doesn’t show up before you. Actually, it doesn’t show up at all - it just listens in the background, removing the weirdness of having a blank box join us humans. The notepad feature may sound ironic given that it’s an AI notetaker, but I love it, because I can jot down a few things that are important to me, knowing it will automatically capture the rest. I also love that when I switch windows to share my screen, it pops up in a new window that’s easy to find, so I never have that “where’s the call window” panic attack. After the call, Granola fills the notepad with good, tight summaries, and gives you the option to search, ask questions, or read/listen to the whole transcript.

Otter

Best for team calls and on-the-go note-taking

Pros:

• Has native mobile apps, so you can use it IRL

• Works on most platforms, including Mac, Windows, Chromebooks, Android

• Has collaboration features, so team members can add comments and mention each other

Cons:

• Lot’s of features, so it can be a bit complicated

• Blank box can arrive before you, or a little late

• Call window can get lost when you share your screen

Otter is my ex, but we’re still friends. It always did a great job of transcribing calls, so maybe it was me. Also, to be honest, it was great at flexibility. I used it on my phone in real-life meetings, not just on video calls. And it played well in the sandbox with non-Mac people. But it was complicated. And sometimes it made things awkward. Like when a small meeting started, and it was just me, them, and the big blank Otter box. Or worse, when it showed up before I did - or a little late, making me anxious because I might have to take actual notes (gasp!).

Fireflies

Best for b2b sales teams

Pros:

• Integrates well with CRMs

• Highly customizable

• Understands 60 languages

Cons:

• The UI isn’t super intuitive

• Sometimes joins late

Fireflies does a lot of things I don’t personally need, but you might. It has analytics tools to track conversation trends and insights, like what’s working best in sales calls. It integrates with CRM tools like Salesforce and Hubspot. And it can generate automatic, personalized follow-up emails. Those features make it great for sales teams, and international organizations.

So, you’re thinking of an idea for a startup… I’ve been doing that on and off for nearly 30 years now (yikes!). It’s one of my favorite things to do, and to help entrepreneurs with. Today, I’ll share some of the tips and tools I find helpful when going through the process.

AI and Ideation

Some aspects of generating startup ideas are timeless. For example, you’ll always have to find a customer with an important, unmet need or desire, and offer them a solution they find far better than the one they’re using today. But in other ways, AI is starting to change the process. You can use AI tools as a brainstorming partner, to generate potential ideas, or to act as your customer (in addition to interviewing actual customers). You can also look for business ideas that use AI to radically improve solutions to customer problems. And once you’re ready to test your ideas, you can use AI to build and share prototypes and value propositions, and to collect and interpret feedback - all in ways that are faster and less expensive than just a few years ago.

Ideation Mindset

Here are some tips I’ve found helpful for getting into the right mindset when coming up with an idea:

The process is usually iterative, not linear. So think about it as a series of small steps that can lead to something bigger. It tends to be hard to envision the right idea from the start. You’re more likely to learn and change your mind as you go. You will be making a series of experiments, coming up with hypotheses and testing them like a scientist. Many of those experiments will fail, but you’ll learn and gain insights along the way. That’s part of the process, so embrace it.

Fall in love with the customer and their problem, not your solution. It’s always tempting to start by dreaming up the product you’ll build that customers will love. That’s exciting, creative - and safe, since you’re doing it without the risk that customers won’t want it, use it or buy it. And you can keep making it “better”, from your own perspective, adding to it, and delaying contact with the real world. That can work - there are always exceptions - but you’ll probably save lots of headaches down the road if you focus on getting in front of customers early, to learn who they are and what they care about, before spending too much time and money building something they may not want.

Adopt a “beginner’s mindset”. That’s a buddhist concept where people try to let go of their preconceptions, and look at situations with a fresh perspective. Be open to new ideas and ways of looking at things. Be curious and explore. Give yourself the freedom to make mistakes, to admit what you don’t know, to learn.

Areas of Interest

What excites or bothers you personally right now? Is there something you care deeply about? Or an everyday problem that’s driving you crazy? Pay attention to what piques your curiosity, especially if you’ve been going deeper and deeper into a rabbit hole, like reading books, listening to podcasts, talking to others about it, going to industry events - and you keep finding it more and more interesting. Make lists of these areas of interest. Collect them. See which ones stay with you over time, and which ones you get tired of quickly.

Idea Screen

Once you choose an area of interest, make a screen - a set of guidelines to follow when you brainstorm potential ideas. A screen can keep you focused, and weed out ideas that don’t deserve your attention. You’ll want to make your own personalized screen, but here are some ideas you may want to incorporate.

Customer

• You know the customer. Meaning you know about them, and you know many of them personally. They could be people like you, or people and / or companies you know well or work with often. If you’re going to come up with something they want, you’ll need to understand them. It’s also a big help if you have access to at least a few dozen of the potential customers already, so it’s easy to talk to them, learn about them, and try to sell to them.

• You care deeply about the customer. Building a company that solves the needs of customers you respect, trust and care about is much more interesting and fulfilling. If things work out, you’ll be thinking about this customer and talking to and about them constantly, for years to come. So choose wisely.

• The customer spends money. This bleeds over a little bit into the problem, because you want to make sure they spend money to address a specific need. But in general, be wary of serving a customer that expects to get everything for free.

• The customer is open to making decisions. Try to avoid starting with customers that have long, complicated decision making processes, and customers that are highly risk averse. You can always work your way to these customers later, but they’re a tough group to start with. You’re better off picking early customers that are interested in trying new things, and have the ability to make fairly quick purchasing decisions.

Problem

• They have a “hair on fire” problem. Don’t look for something a lot of people care about a little. Instead, find something a small number of people have such a big problem with, they’re desperate to find a solution, and will even welcome a mediocre early version of it. Even better if that problem is frequent, and / or has a big impact, such as on costs or revenue for a business, or on health, wealth or happiness for consumers.

• You have a unique insight into this problem. By knowing this customer well, you see something about them that’s not obvious to others, like a problem they face that existing solutions don’t satisfy. An insight like that is super valuable. You may not find the right solution right away, but if you get the insight right, you can keep experimenting with different solutions until you find one that works.

Solution

• Why now? It’s hard to start a successful company, but it’s even harder when there’s a ton of competition, and you have to win by doing the same thing better than everyone else. There is a flip-side, of course, which is that if there’s competition, at least you know there’s a real customer with a real problem and a solution they’ll use and pay for. But if you want to find a big, innovative opportunity, look for situations where there’s a new technology, a change in regulations, or some other factor that’s driving or unlocking new behaviors for consumers or companies. For example, generative AI, blockchain, GLP-1, or autonomous vehicles. What do these or other new developments make possible that wasn’t before, when it comes to solving an important problem you have a unique insight about?

• Why you? It’s a big help if you can personally take on one or more of the key roles involved in providing the solution. Maybe you’re an industry expert, so you have specialized knowledge or relationships. Or maybe you’re a functional expert, so you can build a solution or market or sell it. In the early stages of building a business, the more hands on you can be, the better. That way, you can stay close to the customer, building and modifying the solution to meet their needs. Also, you can take on the work yourself, instead of paying someone else to do it.

Other considerations

• Market size. Is the opportunity big enough to fit your goals? This is always a tricky one, especially since you’ll probably start with a niche, and expand into adjacent or concentric parts of the market. But it’s worth thinking about, so you don’t run into a nasty surprise down the road. Even doing some back of the envelope math, like how many customers you estimate to need the product, times the revenue you expect from each one, and the number of those customers you think you can realistically capture given competition and resources.

• Distribution. How will you reach the customer? Does each customer generate enough revenue so it makes sense to do direct sales? Is that something you know how to do? Or will you need to reach a much bigger number of customers that each pay a smaller amount through marketing or partnerships - and are those things you know how to do?

Go explore

Once you have one or more areas of interest that you’re excited about, and an idea screener to keep you honest, become a sponge. Go meet with the types of people you think have the problem, people who serve the market, industry experts, entrepreneurs in related areas. Read, listen, watch - become a student of the space. Maybe even start an email newsletter or podcast or social media series about it, to share your learnings, connect with others who share your interest, and collect followers. Start to form some hypotheses around who your customer is, what problems of theirs you have a unique insight about, and why there’s an opportunity for you to solve it, now.

Draft a lean canvas

Resist the urge to do any of the following yet:

• Find a domain name

• Build an MVP

• Raise capital

• Form a corporation

• Sign a partner agreement

• Write a business plan

First, draft a lean canvas. A lean canvas is a simple tool that helps organize your hypotheses, so you can see them all in one place, and test them. It’s intentionally low-fi, with just a minimum amount of text, mostly in bullets. That way, you won’t waste time building a beautiful pitch deck, before you even know what you’re pitching. Also, a lean canvas lets you make changes in seconds, in keeping with the fast, flexible approach outlined above.

Here’s a lean canvas we used before launching Stash, an app that eventually helped millions of people start investing. We got some of these assumptions right, and others wrong - and made a lot of changes along the way. Note: This is a slight variation on the classic lean canvas template.

Using AI to Brainstorm

At this stage of building a startup, general purpose AI tools like Perplexity and ChatGPT can be very helpful. Here are a few prompts you can try:

I want to build a startup with potential to scale. What are some recent changes in technology, science or regulations that could unlock new ways to solve existing problems for consumers?

Play the role of a (product manager designing a new feature at a seed stage b2b tech startup, 30 year old woman from LA shopping for dog treats online, etc.). What are some of your biggest frustrations with the way you currently do this?

I’m interested in (mental health for teenagers, fitness and nutrition for people taking GLP-1, personalized preparation for college, etc.). What are some startup opportunities that exist today thanks to these new changes in technology, science or regulations, that couldn’t be done before?

What are some of the most successful (apps, SAAS tools), and how could they be made 10x better today using AI?

I want to build or buy an existing small business (e.g. law firm, accounting firm, catering business, etc.), and make it 10x more efficient using new technology. Help me brainstorm ideas.

Building a website or web app isn’t the headache it was just a few years ago. Thanks in part to AI, it takes less time, money and technical expertise. I caught up with my friend Matt Hamilton recently, to get his take. Matt has held product management roles at Stash, where I was a co-founder, and at Venmo, Bank Novo and Republic. He’s also an entrepreneur and side-project guru who has built tools to help non-technical people build websites, among other things.

“No code platforms like bubble are just incredible. I use bubble for nearly every project these days - especially for building sophisticated web apps. I even went to BubbleCon last year. It’s amazing how many times I’ve told developers that I built a site on bubble, and they’ve said ‘Are you kidding me?’ They don't realize what's possible these days using a no code platform. Here are a few of the best tools for building different types of websites and web apps. Most of them use or integrate with AI, though to different degrees.

Best for complex web sites and apps, including for B2B startups

Pros:

• Great for sophisticated web applications, like those with custom backend needs.

• Scalable backend that can handle increasing user bases and data demands.

• High degree of customization for workflows and user interfaces.

• Supports integration with many third-party services via APIs.

Cons:

• Takes time to master its advanced features, especially for non-technical users.

• Can be tough to migrate applications off the platform, so you can get locked in.

The cost of digital advertising has doubled over the past five years. At my last startup, we got frustrated with the high costs of running search and social ads, so we tested content marketing. We didn’t know what we were doing - and needed to do it well since we were in healthcare - so we hired an agency. They charged us $10,000 to write 10 articles in two months, or $1,000 per article. It took six months to see traffic pick up, at which point we realized visitors weren’t converting to paid customers. Womp, womp.

Fortunately, AI has revolutionized content marketing. Now, startups can crank out dozens or even hundreds of SEO optimized articles in weeks, attracting the right customers without breaking the bank.

The challenge is finding the right tool, given that there are already dozens out there, with more popping up all the time. To help, we’ve recommended the best ones for a few common use cases. While there are AI tools that write copy for websites and ads, and that specialize in specific tasks like researching competitor tactics, improving SEO for existing content, or planning campaigns, we’ll focus here on AI tools that write new articles designed to attract visitors likely to become customers.

Jasper AI

Best for writing that performs and reads well

Pros:

• Creates articles that are on-brand, and seem like they were written by a human

• Easy to set up and to use, even with minimal technical expertise

• Generates content quickly, so it can really scale

• Funnels traffic where it converts best, like your homepage

Cons:

• May oversimplify or misinterpret complex, technical topics

• Trained on data that’s not always up to date, which can require fact checking

Pricing:

• $5–$10/article

Some SEO writing performs well, but would make a discerning reader cringe. Not on Jasper’s watch. It provides brand voice training, to align copy with your preferred style and tone. It writes quickly, and has a lot of customization options. Jasper can also integrate with Surfer SEO, to make sure your articles are optimized for search engines. However, Jasper can struggle with complex technical topics and requires occasional editing to ensure accuracy and personalization. But overall, Jasper is a great tool for writing high quality content at scale. Pricing starts at $39/month for unlimited AI writing, with costs varying based on usage and plan. We estimate that works out to less than $10 per article.

KoalaWriter

Best for writing that performs well, with low effort and cost

Pros:

• Generates full SEO articles with minimal human input.

• Integrates with live SERP data to align with Google's latest rankings.

• Offers good search intent matching, ensuring articles answer user queries.

• Provides a good balance between cost and SEO performance.

Cons:

• Requires some user input to customize content settings.

• May not offer as much depth in complex topics.

Pricing:

• $2.50–$9 per article

KoalaWriter is designed for startups that need fast, low-cost AI-written content that ranks well. It generates SEO articles with minimal editing required. It also has a user-friendly interface. Your writing may not win you a Pulitzer, and customization can take some effort, but KoalaWriter strikes a good balance between performance and cost. Pricing is flexible and affordable.

LongShot AI

Best for writing fact-checked, industry-specific articles

Pros:

• Uses real-time sources to fact-check AI-generated articles, ensuring accuracy and trustworthiness.

• Ideal for startups in high-trust industries like tech, finance, and healthcare.

• Helps improve domain authority with research-backed content.

• Inexpensive, especially given the quality it produces.

LongShot AI is notable for its fact-checking capabilities, so it’s good for startups in industries where accuracy is critical. It does take some time to learn about all of its features, and it may be overly complex for some users. Still, you’ve got to love its combination of specialized performance and affordable pricing.

Pau is a successful entrepreneur I’ve known for several years. What do you use byword for?

We use byword for writing SEO-optimized blog posts to attract inbound leads.

What’s your level of expertise in SEO optimized content?

I have expertise in marketing, but not specifically in SEO.

What did you do before using byword?

We wanted to write blog posts to drive website traffic and potential leads. First, we looked into hiring a traditional SEO agency. I got introductions from friends at bigger companies that had a lot of success with SEO. The agencies wanted $5,000 to $10,000 per month to write 3-5 blog posts. It seemed like a lot of money to spend for a company like ours. Then someone suggested byword as an alternative.

Describe your process for using byword, and any other tools you use along with it.

I did it myself, and it was very easy. I followed their step by step instructions, which are very helpful. It took me a few hours to get it up and running, over the course of a few weeks. The only trick was that I needed to understand how to connect byword to our website which is built with webflow. I produced 400 blog posts within four months, and then waited for organic traffic to grow.

How have the results been?

We’ve had more organic traffic than I've ever had in any previous business, and steady growth in keyword rankings. Compared to using an agency, we’ve had 10x better results, with a fraction of the cost and time. I wrote the blog posts about a year and a half ago. Within a few months, our traffic grew from zero to nearly 20K visitors per month, and it’s still growing.

Who this is for

Thousands of founders out there need to figure out how to use AI tools to make their startups 10x more productive. I’m one of them. Pretty soon, it won’t be an option - we’ll have to do it in order to stay competitive. But it’s hard to know exactly what AI tools can do for our startups, which tools to use, and how to put them to work for us - especially for those of us who weren’t CS majors.

By now, we’ve all heard what’s coming. Forward-thinking founders will use AI agents (I’ll call them “AI tools”) to move faster and get better results, with smaller teams and less capital. Who I am

I’m not an AI expert, but I’ll use that as an advantage. I’m a non-technical founder going on this journey along with you. If I can figure this out, you can too. Here’s my background:

Of course, that’s the highlight reel. I’ve also started a lot of companies that didn’t work out well, including a social network that started with Ivy League graduates 8 years too early (oops!). I’m a New Yorker, though I moved to the east end of Long Island during Covid with my wife, two sons and our sheepadoodle, so now I’m back and forth.
